Introducing Cambridge IGCSE at Oxley College

At Oxley, we believe students thrive when they are challenged to think deeply, question confidently and engage with ideas that extend beyond the classroom.

From 2027, Year 9 students will have the opportunity to choose selected Cambridge IGCSE subjects as Stage 5 electives, providing an academically rigorous, globally recognised Stage 5 credential for students seeking greater depth and challenge.

Cambridge IGCSE is one of the world's most widely recognised secondary qualifications, taught in more than 150 countries and respected by leading universities and employers around the world. It develops independent thinkers who can analyse, evaluate and apply knowledge with confidence.

Rather than replacing the NSW curriculum, Cambridge IGCSE complements it, giving students another pathway to pursue academic excellence within Oxley's existing Stage 5 program while remaining fully engaged in the NSW curriculum.

Cambridge IGCSE is the world's most popular international curriculum for 14 to 16-year-olds.

Why are we introducing Cambridge IGCSE at Oxley?

Cambridge IGCSE is a natural extension of our 2025-2027 Strategic Commitment to enlightened academic rigour

As education continues to evolve, success is increasingly defined by a student's ability to think critically, communicate clearly, solve complex problems and apply knowledge in unfamiliar situations.

These are the very capabilities that Cambridge IGCSE is designed to develop.

For students who are ready for additional academic challenge, IGCSE provides opportunities to:

  • explore concepts in greater depth
  • develop sophisticated analytical and writing skills
  • strengthen independent learning habits
  • build confidence through externally benchmarked assessment
  • prepare more effectively for the academic demands of Years 11 and 12.

Key Information:

Cambridge IGCSE encourages students to move beyond memorising content.

Instead, students learn to:

  • analyse evidence
  • evaluate different perspectives
  • construct reasoned arguments
  • solve unfamiliar problems
  • communicate with clarity and confidence.

It is an approach to learning that develops both subject knowledge and the higher-order thinking skills increasingly valued by universities and future employers.

Cambridge IGCSE is not a separate program.

Students remain fully enrolled in the NSW curriculum while selecting Cambridge IGCSE subjects as Stage 5 electives.

The program has been carefully designed to integrate into our existing elective structure, giving students meaningful choice without increasing complexity.
