What inspired you to pursue teaching, and what do you find most rewarding about working in education?
I was always interested in teaching, but after high school I studied a Bachelor of Media and worked as a radio producer for several years. I undertook a teaching degree while my kids were toddlers and I’ve been teaching for 7 years now. I enjoy the blend of science and art that goes into teaching. It’s strangely similar to live radio in that there is a lot of research and preparation to be done beforehand, and then it’s show/class-time where unexpected things may happen!
Tell us a bit about your journey - what led you to teach at Oxley?
I lived in Hong Kong for 12 years, and when my family moved back to Australia we chose to settle in the Highlands. Oxley felt similar to a school that my son had just begun Kindy at in Hong Kong, so that’s what initially pulled me in. As I got to know the school as a parent, I decided it was a place I wanted to work too.
What do you hope students remember most about their time in your classroom?
I hope that they feel we all work together as a team, that my classroom is a place they feel belonging, that they feel supported and challenged to be their best, and that they remember having some laughs too.
When you're not at school, what are some things you love doing or exploring?
Most mornings before school you’ll find me at the gym, and after school I’m an Uber driver for my 3 kids! If I had my way, every school holidays I would be exploring a different country and culture with my family.
What's your favourite thing about the Southern Highlands?
Even though I have been back in Australia for 8 years now, I still find myself glancing into a field I drive by every day in the hope to see some kangaroos there! The open green spaces of the Highlands are vastly different to the hot, humid and often polluted environment of Hong Kong. I love big, Aussie blue skies and the rhythm of the four seasons that we experience in the Highlands.
